Winter K-Beauty Skincare Routine: Dry Skin Prevention

After an abnormally warm ending of 2016, I was secretly hoping that this winter would be free of snow and harsh winds. But alas, the snow is back. At least it's pretty?

During the winter my skin gets extremely dry to the point where my skin stings when I put some moisturizer on it. This winter I've been putting more effort in my skincare to keep my skin as hydrated as possible.

In this post, I'll discuss my daily skincare routine and the products I use.

current favorite face wash || use every morning + evening

This may seem like a no-brainer, but always wash your face in the mornings and evenings with products with rejuvenating ingredients.

I use the Innisfree Jeju Volcanic Facial Foam ($14) and the Innisfree Jeju Volcanic Pore Scrub Foam ($10) to wash my face in the morning and evening. These products are so smooth and especially good for oily and acne-prone skin. They're made with amazing ingredients, and I immediately noticed a difference in my skin. I love these products and plan on using them in all four seasons! They've done wonders for my skin this winter. However, when my skin is too dry, I do not use the scrub since it's too abrasive for my sensitive skin.

current favorite serums + moisturizers || apply after face wash in morning + evening

It is so incredibly important to use the right moisturizers and oils for your skin, because they retain the good oils that hydrate your skin. I apply all the products listed below after washing my face, both in the morning and evening. Here are my current favorites (left to right):

Sooryehan Bichaek Ginseng Essence ($42) This product is so good. Made out of ginseng and herbs, it's suitable for all skin types, all year around. Great moisturizer as well. To apply, "dot" it on your face and gently pat to spread the product.

Innisfree White Tone Up Eye Serum ($23) I used the Bobbi Brown Hydrating Eye Cream for the past three years, but I have fully converted to this Innisfree one! Don't get me wrong: the Bobbi Brown one is amazing, but the Innisfree Eye Serum delivers the same under-eye brightening qualities for half the price. I personally think the Innisfree Eye Serum does a better job of moisturizing the under-eye area than the Bobbi Brown Eye Cream.

Dr. Jart+ Water Drop Hydrating Moisturizer ($36) I first tried this product when I got a sample of it at Sephora. LOVE IT. I was super nervous about trying it out because I'd read some reviews saying that it causes breakouts, but I have not had that problem. It's fascinating how well this product works given its light and smooth texture. I will be purchasing this moisturizer again once I run out.

current favorite sunscreens || ALWAYS apply sunscreen!!!

One of the worst things you can do to your skin is not apply sunscreen. Exposure to sunlight dries out your skin, so always apply sunscreen before you head out the door. Here are two sunscreens I really like:

Both sunscreens are great. Obviously, the IOPE has a stronger SPF than the Innisfree, but in terms of texture, both are soft and smooth. I use the IOPE sunscreen when I plan on going out. I use the Innisfree sunscreen when I know I'm going to spend most of the day indoors (e.g. classes).

current favorite face masks || apply face masks at least three times a week

I apply face masks at least three times a week in the evenings after a nice shower. I use generic face masks, like Celavi (top left), The Face Shop (top right), and Innisfree (bottom). After applying face masks, repeat step 2, but I only apply eye cream after doing a face mask. I feel that the serum and moisturizer will make my post-face mask face a little too oily.

Proper skincare is so important, especially in the winter! Hope these tips help!

Phyllis

  1. I've been so into face masks this winter and definitely want to try the Innisfree ones you recommended! I've heard great things about Korean skin care products!
